Beyond Compliance: Shared Decision-Making and the Use of Psychiatric Medication in our Recovery
Patricia Deegan, Ph.D., is an activist in the disability rights movement, a writer, lecturer and researcher. She is also an independent consultant with Pat Deegan & Associates, LLC, and an adjunct professor at Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Boston University. She has many published papers, some of which have been translated into nine languages. Dr. Deegan has lectured on the topics of self-directed recovery and empowerment around the world and has made three films on disability-related topics. Dr. Deegan has lived her own journey of recovery, having first been diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Duquesne University.

Time has passed; some of our recent artists are making a living from their art while communicating their stories. Moving Beyond Trauma to a Place of Wellness

The presenter will address the impact of trauma on his life and the lives of others, and how we can inform the system as advocates for ourselves and those we care about. He will speak about his experiences within the mental health system as a provider as well as a consumer of services; and he will move from telling his story of illness to retelling it from a wellness perspective, emphasizing the key components in his recovery: Hope, Support, Self-Advocacy, and personal responsibility. He will focus on the importance of self-awareness, and he hopes to inspire others to start looking at their whole being: Physical, mental and spiritual. The panel will discuss recovering from the effects of trauma and becoming trauma-informed.

Sexual/Gender Minority Issues: Transcending the Mainstream

Historically, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) consumers/survivors have been a "movement within a movement", marginalized in LGBT community due to acknowledging their mental illnesses, and in the consumer/survivor community for being “out of the closet.” LGBT consumers/survivors face the same issues that the rest of the LGBT community faces – relationship recognition; inequality in marriage, the workplace and the military; hate crimes; HIV/AIDS; and other important issues—but have the added difficulties involved with mental illness. Representatives of the LGBT consumer/survivor community will discuss the special challenges that face people whose sexual/gender orientation fall outside the mainstream.

Leah Harris will share her story of what it was like to be a suicidal adolescent, and how her family and treatment providers responded in both helpful and unhelpful ways. She will trace the arc of how she recovered—the transformation of going from wanting to die to wanting to live. She argues that preventing suicide in young people cannot just be about screening, but also needs to be about truly listening to them, validating their experiences, nurturing and honoring their innate wisdom, respecting them and giving them the power to determine the course of their lives to the greatest extent possible.
